Produced from 1991 to 2002, the FD3S paired a twin-turbo 13B-REW rotary — the first sequential twin-turbo system in a production car — with a chassis built around low weight and near-perfect balance rather than raw cylinder count. It remains the generation with the strongest collector following of any RX-7.
Overview
The FD3S ran through three factory revisions — Series 6, 7 and 8 — with power climbing at each stage: 255PS on Series 6, 265PS on Series 7 manuals, and the full 280PS gentlemen's-agreement ceiling on Series 8 with larger turbos and a bigger intercooler. JDM trim names to know are Type R (sport suspension), Type RS (Bilstein dampers, optional six-speed manual) and the rarer, convertible-based RZ. The final Series 8 Spirit R, built for the 2002 model year, is the most sought-after send-off edition of the entire run.
Lightweight Flagship
Low-production, convertible-derived spec aimed squarely at drivers who want the sharpest possible FD — the trim collectors specifically hunt for.
Core Performance Trims
The bulk of the desirable FD market — sport suspension, Bilstein dampers on RS, and the option of a six-speed manual across Series 7–8 cars.
Auction Pricing
Clean FD3S auction results in Japan typically span roughly ¥2,000,000 to ¥5,000,000+ depending on series, turbo condition and rotary rebuild history. Late Series 8 cars, Spirit R editions and low-mileage, well-documented Type RS/RZ examples command a real premium — exceptional, unmodified cars have sold for the equivalent of $60,000 USD or more at auction as the FD's collector status has grown.
What to Check
Rotary condition is everything on an FD — compression testing and rebuild history matter far more here than on a piston engine of the same age, and a poorly maintained 13B-REW is an expensive problem. We also check for rust in the rear subframe area (a known FD weak point), turbo seal condition, and cooling system health, since rotaries are unforgiving of overheating. This is a car where the auction sheet alone genuinely isn't enough — our in-person inspection is built around exactly these points.
Import Eligibility
Rolling Eligible
Most FD3S cars (built before August 2001) have already cleared the 25-year threshold. The final Spirit R cars, built to 2002, clear progressively through to August 2027.
Rolling Eligible
Same rolling 25-year window as Australia. See our Import page for state-level registration notes.
MOT Only
Past the 10-year IVA threshold — a standard MOT is all that's needed, regardless of build date.
FAQ
Are rotary engines really that risky to own?
They're more maintenance-sensitive than a piston engine, not fragile in the way that reputation suggests — a well-maintained 13B-REW with documented rebuild history is a reliable engine. The key is verifying that history before you buy, which is exactly what we check.
Is a Spirit R worth the premium?
If originality and long-term value are the priority, yes — it's the factory send-off edition and increasingly recognised as the pinnacle FD. If you're planning to build the car your way regardless, a well-kept Type RS is better value.
