Built between 1999 and August 2002, the R34 is the GT-R most people mean when they say "Skyline" — 11,578 built in total, immortalised in pop culture, and now the centre of one of the most closely tracked import-eligibility timelines in the JDM world. If you've been waiting for "your" R34 build date to turn 25, this is the page for you.
Overview
The R34 (chassis code BNR34) carried the RB26DETT twin-turbo inline-six through its most developed form, with factory and tuner variants spanning roughly 327hp to 493hp depending on spec. The V-Spec added ATTESA E-TS Pro with an active rear limited-slip differential and a carbon-fibre rear diffuser; the V-Spec II refined it further. At the top sits the ultra-rare Nür (1,003 built) and the Nismo Z-Tune, among the most valuable modern Nissans in existence.
BNR34 GT-R
The core range most buyers target. V-Spec and V-Spec II add active rear LSD, aero and suspension refinements over the standard car.
Flagship Rarities
Only 1,003 Nür and 285 M-Spec Nür built; the Nismo Z-Tune is rarer still. These are collector-grade purchases in their own market bracket.
Auction Pricing
Standard R34 GT-Rs now regularly trade from ¥10,000,000 to ¥20,000,000+ at Japanese auction depending on grade and mileage, with V-Spec and V-Spec II examples sitting higher again. The Nür and Z-Tune occupy an entirely different bracket — a 2001 M-Spec Nür with 6,817km on the clock recently sold for ¥33,205,000 at auction in Japan, and prices for genuine examples continue to climb as global recognition of the R34 grows.
What to Check
R34 GT-Rs are heavily counterfeited and cloned at the trim-badge level — confirming genuine V-Spec/V-Spec II hardware (not just badges) against chassis records matters more here than on almost any other JDM import. Beyond that: RB26 and turbo condition, ATTESA E-TS Pro function, and an honest accident history given how many of these have seen track use. This is exactly the kind of car where an in-person inspection before you bid is non-negotiable.
Import Eligibility
Rolling Eligible
Most R34s (built before August 2001) have already cleared the 25-year threshold. The final cars, built up to August 2002, clear progressively through to August 2027.
Rolling Eligible
Same rolling 25-year window as Australia. See our Import page for state-level registration notes.
MOT Only
Past the 10-year IVA threshold — a standard MOT is all that's needed, regardless of build date.
FAQ
When does my R34 GT-R's build date turn 25?
Australia and the US both count from the manufacture date. Since production ran to August 2002, the very last cars won't fully clear until August 2027. Tell us the build date you're after and we'll tell you exactly where it sits.
How do I avoid a fake V-Spec?
We verify chassis numbers, factory option codes and mechanical specification against the auction sheet before you bid — badges and body kits can be added to a standard car, but the underlying hardware and paperwork can't be faked as easily.
