Toyota Mark II JZX100

The final, most refined JZX-generation Mark II — the same single-turbo VVT-i six as the Chaser, in Toyota's most understated body.

Produced from 1996 to 2000, the JZX100 is the last Mark II to run the JZX chassis code before Toyota moved to the X110 generation and its direct-injection engine. It carries the same single-turbo VVT-i drivetrain upgrade the Chaser received, in a body most JDM enthusiasts overlook in favor of its flashier sibling — which is exactly what keeps its prices sensible.

Mark II Generations

Overview

Like the JZX90 before it, the JZX100 Mark II shares its chassis and engines with the Chaser and Cresta, differing mainly in styling, interior trim and market position. The Tourer V grade swapped the old parallel-twin-turbo 1JZ-GTE for a single CT15B turbo with VVT-i, holding the JDM-standard 280PS ceiling while gaining a noticeably fatter torque curve — the same upgrade that defined the JZX100 Chaser. Grande remained the naturally aspirated luxury line for buyers who wanted the Mark II's traditional sedan character without the turbo six.

Lines

Tourer V / Grande

Tourer V remains the sport-focused hero grade with the turbo six; Grande stays the comfort-focused luxury line on the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE.

Engine

1JZ-GTE VVT-i, Single Turbo

Identical to the JZX100 Chaser's upgraded engine — a single CT15B turbo and VVT-i replacing the JZX90's twin-turbo arrangement.

Auction Pricing

Clean JZX100 Tourer V Mark IIs typically trade between ¥1,500,000 and ¥3,500,000, broadly matching equivalent Chaser pricing for the same drivetrain and mileage. With pricing this closely matched, the choice between Chaser and Mark II comes down to body style rather than value — both deliver the same 1JZ-GTE performance.

What to Check

The same checks apply as on the JZX100 Chaser, given the shared platform: rust around the rear quarters and sills, water pooling near the wiper cowl that can affect the panel behind the brake booster, and grinding into third gear as a sign of R154 gearbox wear. Confirm timing belt and water pump service history on the VVT-i engine, and check tension rod bushings, dash condition and clutch wear given the car's age.

Australia

Fully Eligible

USA

Fully Eligible

The entire JZX100 Mark II production run cleared the federal 25-year exemption years ago. See our Import page for state-level detail.

Well past the 10-year IVA threshold, so a standard MOT is all that's needed to register — no IVA test required.

FAQ

Why is the JZX100 Mark II cheaper than the JZX100 Chaser?

Identical drivetrain, but the Mark II's more conservative styling draws less enthusiast bidding at auction. If badge and body style matter less to you than the driving experience, it's genuinely one of the better-value 1JZ-GTE cars available.

JZX90 or JZX100 Mark II?

The JZX100 is the more refined, easier-to-live-with car with better parts availability. The JZX90's twin-turbo engine has a rawer character some buyers prefer. See our JZX90 Mark II guide for the comparison.
