Honda Civic Type R EK9

The car that started it all — the highest specific output of any naturally aspirated 1.6L production engine of its era, in a stripped-out JDM-only hatchback.

Produced from August 1997 to August 2000, the EK9 was a JDM-exclusive that never officially left Japan — which is exactly why it built such a cult following everywhere else. It's the car that defined what "Type R" means: no turbo, no compromise, just an obsessively tuned chassis and one of the great naturally aspirated engines Honda ever built.

Civic Type R Generations

Overview

The EK9 took the regular Civic hatchback's platform and rebuilt it around a single goal: front-wheel-drive handling with no equal. The hand-ported 1.6L B16B VTEC makes 185PS at 8,200rpm — about 116PS per litre, the highest specific output of any naturally aspirated 1.6L production engine at the time — paired with a close-ratio 5-speed, a helical LSD, seam-welded chassis reinforcement, and stripped sound-deadening. Red Recaro bucket seats and a Momo steering wheel round out a cabin built purely for driving, not comfort.

Body

3-Door Hatchback

A single body style, JDM-only, built on the sixth-generation Civic platform — never officially sold outside Japan.

Engine

B16B VTEC, 185PS @ 8,200rpm

Hand-ported intake and exhaust ports, a lightened flywheel and a close-ratio gearbox — an engine built with no compromise for anything but revs and response.

Auction Pricing

Japanese market data puts clean EK9 values broadly between ¥2,200,000 and ¥5,300,000, with exceptional low-mileage, unmodified examples now trading for roughly double the car's original new price. As the car that started the Type R lineage, condition and originality command a real premium here — modified or track-worn examples sell for meaningfully less than stock, low-kilometre cars, which is exactly why we inspect every car ourselves before you commit to a bid.

What to Check

Given how sought-after and heavily modified this platform has become, verifying originality — matching chassis plate, factory colour, and unmolested interior — is the priority before anything else. Beyond that: rust in the rear arches and sills common to Hondas of this era, hydraulic engine mount wear from years of high-rpm use, clutch and LSD condition, and full service history given how stressed the B16B runs at its 8,200rpm redline. A car that's been revved hard without disciplined maintenance will show it.

FAQ

Was the EK9 ever sold outside Japan?

No — it was a JDM-exclusive model, unlike the EP3 that followed it. Every EK9 in Australia, the UK or the US arrived as a private import, which is exactly the process we handle for you.

EK9 or EP3?

The EK9 is the purer, more raw driving experience with its screaming B16B and lighter body — and the more collectible of the two today. The EP3 brought a bigger, more usable K20A engine and broader parts support. See our EP3 Civic Type R guide for the comparison.
