Honda Civic Type R FD2

The first — and, for a long time, only — Civic Type R sedan, and the last Type R ever built around a naturally aspirated engine with no forced induction anywhere in sight.

Produced from 2007 to 2010 as a JDM-only model, the FD2 broke from the EK9 and EP3's hatchback format for a four-door sedan body — and brought the K20A back to its highest-ever JDM output in the process. It's widely considered the last "purist" Type R before the lineup went turbocharged, and the one enthusiasts most often name as the pick between EK9 and the modern FK8.

Civic Type R Generations

Overview

Where the EP3 shared its body with the broader Civic hatchback lineup, the FD2 was a JDM-exclusive sedan, never sold anywhere else in the world. Its revised K20A makes 225PS at 8,000rpm — the highest output any naturally aspirated K-series Type R engine ever produced — with a 9,000rpm redline indicator, revised intake, cams and exhaust over the EP3's tune. A helical LSD, 6-speed close-ratio gearbox and a notably stiffer chassis than the hatchbacks that came before it round out the package.

Auction Pricing

Japanese market data puts clean FD2 values broadly from ¥2,000,000 up to ¥4,500,000+ for low-mileage, well-kept examples, reflecting its status as the youngest and, to many enthusiasts, the most complete of the naturally aspirated Type Rs. As the newest car on this list, condition variance is somewhat lower than the older EK9 or EP3, but originality and full service history still drive the top of the market — we inspect every car ourselves before you commit to a bid.

What to Check

The K20A is generally regarded as one of Honda's most reliable engines, but check timing chain tensioner condition on cars with higher kilometres and confirm valve clearance service history, since the solid-lifter K-series needs periodic manual adjustment that's easy for an inattentive owner to skip. Given the car's performance reputation, clutch and LSD wear are worth checking on any car with track history, and — as with every heavily desired Type R — confirm the car matches its factory specification before you commit to a bid.

Import Eligibility

Because FD2 production runs from 2007 to 2010, it's the youngest chassis on this list and hasn't come close to the age-based 25-year threshold yet in most markets — but as with the EP3, Evo VII–IX and WRX STI GDB, that doesn't mean every market makes you wait.

Australia

SEVS-Eligible Now

The FD2 Civic Type R is listed on the SEVS Performance Criterion register, meaning eligible builds can be imported now regardless of age. We'll confirm your exact build against the current register.

USA

Not Yet Eligible

No SEVS-style pathway in the US — the federal 25-year exemption doesn't begin clearing FD2 build dates until 2032, with the rest of the run following through 2035. See our Import page.

UK

MOT Only

No age-based import ban and every FD2 is now past the 10-year IVA threshold — a standard MOT is all that's needed, available now regardless of build date.

FAQ

Can I import an FD2 to Australia now?

In most cases yes, via the SEVS register rather than waiting on the 25-year rule — but it's build-specific, so we always check your target car against the current register before you commit. This is currently the only major market where an FD2 can land without waiting into the 2030s.

EK9, EP3 or FD2?

EK9 is the purest, most raw and most collectible; EP3 (JDM-spec) is the best value entry point with strong parts support; FD2 is the newest, most powerful and most refined, in the only sedan body across the lineup. All three are excellent — it comes down to body style, budget and how soon you can get one on the road in your market.
