Honda Civic Type R EP3

The generation that introduced the K-series to Type R — and the JDM version is a meaningfully different, more focused car than the one most of the world remembers.

Produced from 2001 to 2005, the EP3 replaced the EK9's B-series with an all-new K20A engine and moved Type R production to Honda's Swindon plant in the UK — but the JDM-spec car we source is a genuinely different animal to the export version most enthusiasts picture, built with a higher-output engine and a factory helical LSD the export cars don't have.

Civic Type R Generations

Overview

Although Euro and JDM-market EP3s were both assembled at Swindon, the JDM-spec Type R powertrain — a distinct, higher-tune K20A — was built in Japan and shipped over specifically for cars destined for the domestic market. The JDM K20A makes around 215PS versus the export K20A2's roughly 200PS, and only the JDM car gets the helical limited-slip differential, red Recaro race seats, and a more track-focused suspension tune; the export car runs an open differential and softer settings. This is the version worth chasing if you want the car as Honda's own engineers set it up.

Spec

JDM vs Export

JDM-spec cars carry a higher-output K20A, a factory helical LSD and a firmer suspension tune the export EP3 doesn't get — the meaningful reason to seek out a Japan-market car specifically.

Engine

K20A i-VTEC, ~215PS

The first K-series Type R engine — high-lift cams, high-compression pistons, a balanced crank and a lightweight flywheel over the standard K20A base.

Auction Pricing

Japanese market data puts clean, JDM-spec EP3 values broadly between ¥1,400,000 and ¥2,500,000, with well-kept, low-mileage examples in Championship White trending toward the top of that range. Prices have climbed steadily as more buyers learn the JDM-spec car is meaningfully better equipped than the export version — condition and originality still matter enormously, which is why we inspect every car ourselves before you commit to a bid.

What to Check

Confirm the car is genuinely JDM-spec (helical LSD, correct engine code and Recaro seats) rather than a re-imported export car — it's an easy detail to miss and a meaningful difference in both performance and value. On the K20A itself, check timing chain tensioner wear on higher-mileage cars, a known wear point on this engine family, and confirm valve clearance service history, since the solid-lifter K-series needs periodic manual adjustment. Standard checks for the era apply too: rust in the rear arches and sills, and clutch and LSD condition on any car with track history.

Import Eligibility

Because EP3 production runs from 2001 to 2005, most of the range hasn't reached the age-based 25-year threshold yet — but as with several other performance cars on this list, that doesn't mean every market makes you wait.

Australia

SEVS-Eligible Now

The EP3 Civic Type R is listed on the SEVS Performance Criterion register, meaning eligible builds can be imported now regardless of age. We'll confirm your exact build against the current register.

USA

Rolling Eligible

No SEVS-style pathway in the US — earliest 2001-built cars have just crossed the federal 25-year exemption, with the rest of the range clearing progressively through 2030. See our Import page.

UK

MOT Only

No age-based import ban and every EP3 is now past the 10-year IVA threshold — a standard MOT is all that's needed, available now regardless of build date.

FAQ

Can I import an EP3 to Australia now?

In most cases yes, via the SEVS register rather than waiting on the 25-year rule — but it's build-specific, so we always check your target car against the current register before you commit.

Is the JDM EP3 really different from the one sold in my country?

Yes, meaningfully. The export EP3 sold in Europe, the UK and elsewhere runs a lower-output K20A2 with an open differential and softer suspension. The JDM-spec car we source has the higher-output engine, a helical LSD and a firmer track-oriented setup — closer in spirit to the EK9 and FD2 either side of it.
